Contemporary depiction of the Battle of Drumfree (1565), where Imperial forces under Leo de Weluta won a decisive victory

Great Confessional War

The Great Confessional War was a sectarian conflict taking place in the Holy Levantine Empire occurring within the greater context of the Protestant Reformation, though the immediate cause was the end of the successful prosecution of Imperial wars against the Kingdom of Angla, a relatively short-lived (1350-1554 AD) polity that existed in central Levantia that embraced Protestantism. The doctrines of Restorationism and Reformism had spread throughout Levantia since the beginning of the reformation in 1517 as it had through the rest of the Christian world, particularly finding root in Crona. The relatively stable situation in Levantia rapidly deteriorated, provoking several conflicts between the Emperor and states of the Empire and sparking the counter-reformation within the Catholic Church.

Following the coronation of King Leo II of Urcea after the Holy League victory at the Battle of Drumfree in 1565, the forces of the Protestant Union found themselves on the defensive until their eventual defeat ten years later. Leo, now Emperor Leo III, stripped all Protestant landholders in the Empire of their titles, empowered the Inquisition with broad authority to root out heresy across Levantia, rewarded states of the Holy League, such as Burgundie and Faramount, with then-vacated formerly Protestant lands and electorates, and firmly entrenched Catholicism as the official state faith of the Empire and the undisputed predominant social force in Levantia, the effects of which extended for centuries to come. The victory of the Holy League also lead to a mass exodus of Levantine Protestants abroad, one of the lasting legacies of the conflict. The outflow of these minority groups would prove critical to the history of the world and Ixnay in particular, as it sparked demographic booms throughout regions in which they settled, creating some of the world powers relevant today.
